Colonoscopy
During a colonoscopy, the entire colon and also the last section of the small intestine (ileum) can be viewed and assessed with an endoscope. To perform a colonoscopy, a soft, tubular device, the flexible endoscope, which is several millimeters thick, is inserted through the rectum, the entire colon, and the end part of the small intestine under analgosedation (twilight sleep).
Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is an optical examination and diagnostic procedure in which the esophagus, stomach and upper part of the duodenum are reflected with an endoscope (esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy). It is carried out to diagnose diseases of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum and thus serves to clarify swallowing difficulties, inflammation of the esophagus and stomach, tumors and food intolerance (lactose intolerance, sprue).
